Our Strategy

Key Strategic Objectives

1. To be the Guardian of the Global Identity of the Abbeyfield movement

The strength of the Abbeyfield movement and what binds countries together is a belief in the ethos and Guiding Principles as set out by Carr-Gomm seventy years ago.

On an ongoing basis it is important to ensure that, globally, the Guiding Principles are in practice and the Brand/trademarks used appropriately.

The Abbeyfield World Council is the most appropriate body to retain overall global oversight and ownership of the Abbeyfield brand and trademarks.

The monitoring function is best undertaken by countries, with formal reporting to the Abbeyfield World Council. It is recognised that how this monitoring function will be achieved will differ according to the size and structure of each country.

2. To act as a Global Knowledge and Innovation Network and Catalyst for Collaboration

Through sharing of knowledge such as innovations, good practice and problem solving, the Abbeyfield World Council can be the leadership body for the Abbeyfield movement.

Knowledge and experience of strategic matters can be shared through discussions at Abbeyfield World Council trustee level.

Another aspect is using social media and newsletters to share house level activities and community events which will be of interest to societies, volunteers, staff and residents and, possibly, outside the Abbeyfield movement.

This will assist in creating a sense of belonging to a vibrant global movement and an understanding of the purpose and value of the Abbeyfield World Council.
